2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him (Christ) we might become the righteousness of God.
One of the greatest lies ever perpetrated in the church is that righteousness can be earned or is earned. We are made to think like that. And thought we could. And so we tried. And tried. And tried. A circle of trying and failing was born. Until giving up becomes an option. Our best shot did not make it. We’re weary, tired and hopeless. The “Holy Standard” imposed was too heavy a burden for us. We sin — often. Our thoughts are contaminated. Our motives too. Traces of disobedience in our actions. Words tainted with malice. And our service is one out of fear of God not blessing and accepting us. We were not religiously faithful in our bible reading and even stole pennies from our tithes and offerings.
Now, I’m not saying that we don’t go to church anymore or faithfully give our tithes and offerings. And most certainly, stop our church service. It’s not the point. These are noble things in their proper context. What I’m saying is, if God’s basis of us being “right” before him are the standards aforementioned let alone moral perfection, then we are hopelessly doomed. I know and you know that if we be honest enough, we can’t par with God’s holy law and its demand for perfection. The church imposed it though. The pastors too — and oh, they too came short (Romans 3:20).
If only the gospel was faithfully preached, it could have saved us from this impossible heavy laden quest to perfect holiness. We’re not told that righteousness is a gift (Romans 5:17) that came along with the Lord Jesus Christ. And that, good works are nothing but a result of Jesus’ righteousness through us (Philippians 1:11). There could have been less “holier than thou” church people and more humble Christians walking around with a grateful heart knowing that they’re just sinners made righteous by the one man’s obedience — Jesus (Romans 5:19).
