Jeremiah 31:31-33 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
Romans 6:14 “For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.”
Law and Grace are the two major covenants in the bible. A covenant or an agreement involves two parties — God and Man. Between these two, “terms and clauses” are to be agreed upon. The giver of the covenant is God and the keeper is man. God set before men blessings and curses that go along with these covenants. When they obey God sends blessings, but curses if they don’t ( Deuteronomy 28 ).
When God gave the law in mount Sinai, men willingly and confidently accepted it saying “We will do everything the Lord has said.” ( Exodus 19:8 ). But God throughout time did not find anyone who fully obeyed His demands from the law. Saving the incapable men, God sent forth his Son as a man and in behalf of men to fulfil the law ( Galatians 4:4-5 ). And finally, God found one perfect fully obedient man in Jesus Christ, blameless in his words, actions, and thoughts ( Matthew 5:17, Romans 5:19 ). Through Jesus, God established his new covenant — the covenant of grace ( John 1:17 ).
No longer will a man work to earn God’s favor and blessings. The undeserved, unmerited, unearned and unconditional favor of God is now the new covenant and its all because Jesus paid for it. God established the covenant of grace in the cost of Jesus. A lot of Christians though are still living under the clauses of the old covenant as if nothing happened. Living under the old covenant is setting aside the work of Christ.
